Historic Preservation

Douglas Distefano

This accelerated certificate course is designed for professionals interested in learning the fundamentals of historic preservation policy and practice in the United States. Ideal for building professionals such as architects, urban planners, and real estate specialists as well as other design professionals who aspire to work in historic preservation, public history, tourism, design, and the management of the built environment, this one-semester online certificate program explores both the development of historic preservation as a field and the characteristics of contemporary practice. Historic preservation in the United States advanced substantially with the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act in 1966. At the same time, local landmarks commissions around the country continued to become a potent and growing force. Today, the preservation field continues to adapt and change, responding to the needs of the public and not-for-profit sectors as well as changing trends and interests.

Students will benefit from guest lectures by experienced practitioners and an optional in-person field trip to a significant historic neighborhood in New York City which will offer valuable insights into preservation battles. This course is delivered in an online format that uses a combination of real-time, instructor-led (synchronous) video meetings and self-paced (asynchronous) learning within NYU’s online learning platform, with weekly deadlines for lesson and assignment completion. Live class sessions will be recorded, and an alternative assignment will be available for students who will not participate in the field trip. In addition, this course offers opportunities for one-on-one coaching and provides insights about networking in the field. American Institute of Architects (AIA) CES approved, 37 LUs.

This single course fulfills the requirements for the Certificate in Historic Preservation Policy and Practice (Accelerated).
