Vocology Research Methods

Our understanding of the voice is rapidly evolving. The best way to keep up with the latest knowledge is to read, understand, and critically appraise the latest research on the voice. This course begins with an overview of the history and philosophy of voice science, followed by hands-on experiences to teach you skills in searching the scientific literature and critically reading research articles. We will then work together to learn the basic skills of conducting your own research, beginning with an understanding of how to develop a research question, designing a research study, and engaging in successful collaborations. We will also discuss critical aspects of research oversight and protection, including protection of human subjects, the role and the institutional review board (IRB), responsible conduct of research, and the ethical use of animals in research as regulated by the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Laboratory animal Welfare (OLAW) and overseen by institutional animal care and use committees (IACUC).
